The country is located in West Africa and shares land borders with the Republic of Benin in the west, Chad and Cameroon in the east, and Niger in the north. The strategic partnership between the People's Republic of China and the Federal Republic of Nigeria maintained sound and smooth development in 2010.
The two countries had closer high level contacts. On 6 May, President Hu Jintao sent a message of condolence to President Goodluck Jonathan on the passing of former Nigerian President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua. On 10 May, NPC Vice Chairman Han Qide went to the Nigerian embassy in China to offer condolences on behalf of the Chinese government. On 8-9 January, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi visited Nigeria and had separate meeting and talks with Vice President Jonathan and Foreign Minister Ojo Maduekwe. From 29 September to 2 October, Minister of Industry and Information Technology Li Yizhong attended the 50th anniversary celebrations of Nigeria's independence as Special Envoy of President Hu Jintao and met with President Jonathan.
On 13 August, Nigerian President Jonathan sent a letter of condolence to President Hu Jintao on the devastation caused by landslide in Gansu , China. In August, Nigerian Foreign Minister Henry Ajumogobia visited China. Vice Premier Li Keqiang met with him and Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi had talks with him. In the same month, Nigerian ministerial officials including Minister of Industry and Commerce Jibril Kuye and Minister of Culture and Tourism Abubakar Mohammed attended the National Day of the Nigeria Pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo. In May and September, former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo came to China twice to attend the International Cooperation Conference on Green Economy and Climate Change and the 21st Century Forum.
On 2 November, the new Chinese ambassador to Nigeria Deng Boqing presented his credentials to President Jonathan.
Economic cooperation and trade between the two countries grew steadily. As part of the outcomes of the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, the four rural schools China built for Nigeria were all completed, and the hospital project progressed smoothly. Following the tripartite agreement signed by the Chinese government, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization and the Nigerian government under the "Special Program for Food Security", 55 Chinese agricultural experts and technicians had arrived in Nigeria and started working. The production or mining of the oil field with Chinese investment went on smoothly. The Chinese company Star Times and the Nigerian Television Authority started cooperation in promoting digital TV programs.
Bilateral exchanges and cooperation in culture and education strengthened. Programs of CCTV 4 and CCTV 9 became available in Nigeria. Director of the State Administration of Cultural Heritage Shan Jixiang visited Nigeria. Vice Minister of Education Hao Ping attended the UNESCO Eighth E-9 Ministerial Review Meeting. Under the 20+20 Sino-African Universities Cooperation Program, Suzhou University and the University of Lagos formed a cooperation partnership.
