Singapore, officially the Republic of Singapore, is a Southeast Asian island city-state off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, 137 kilometres (85 mi) north of the equator. An island country made up of 63 islands, it is separated from Malaysia by the Straits of Johor to its north and from Indonesia's Riau Islands by the Singapore Strait to its south. The year 2010 marked the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Singapore. Friendly relations between the two countries maintained sound momentum of development. Cooperation in various fields was fruitful.


The two sides had frequent high-level contacts. In November, Vice President Xi Jinping paid an official visit to Singapore. In August, President S. R. Nathan visited China and toured the Shanghai World Expo. In September, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Long visited Chongqing , Hunan , Hubei , Jiangsu and Shanghai . In April, Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong attended in China the annual meeting of the Boao Forum for Asia. Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Teo Chee Hean visited China in the same month. In May, Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew visited China. In June, Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong attended the launching ceremony of the China-Singapore knowledge city of Guangzhou and visited Shanghai . Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng visited Hebei , Zhejiang , Shanghai Airlines and Jiangsu .


In July, Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng came to China and co-chaired with Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan the 7th Meeting of the China-Singapore Joint Steering Council for Bilateral Cooperation, the 12th Meeting of the Joint Steering Council for Suzhou Industrial Park and the 3rd Meeting of the Tianjin Eco-city Joint Steering Committee.


Trade, economic and investment cooperation continued to grow rapidly. Exchanges and cooperation in culture, education, training of professionals and environmental protection produced positive outcomes. The construction of Chinese Cultural Center in Singapore was started. Minister of Foreign Affairs George Yong-Boon Yeo, Minister for Trade and Industry Lim Hng Kiang, Minister for Information, Communication and the Arts Lui Tuck Yew and Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports Vivian Balakrisnan respectively visited China. Several Chinese officials also visited Singapore separately, including Minister of the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee Li Yuanchao, Secretary of CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee Wang Yang, Secretary of the CPC Sichuan Provincial Committee Liu Qibao, Governor of Jilin Province Wang Rulin and Chairman of China Banking Regulatory Commission Liu Mingkang.
